What Lutsen owner Bryce Campbell told police after his arrest
Investigators say Campbell left minutes before the blaze, while he says he stayed only five minutes and disputes the arson timeline.
On Feb. 6, 2024, a fire destroyed the historic Lutsen Lodge, leading investigators to confront owner Bryce Campbell about his presence at the site minutes before the blaze began.
Prosecutors allege Campbell burned down the North Shore landmark for insurance proceeds amid severe financial distress; Lutsen Resort received a bank default letter two weeks before the fire.
Special agent Steve Kritzeck of the Minnesota Commerce Fraud Bureau told Campbell, "What Im telling you is that youre leaving the resort about two minutes before the fire is taking off," though Campbell disputed this, insisting he visited only five minutes.
Authorities arrested Campbell in Southfield, Michigan, last December during an under-oath interview with Auto-Owners Insurance representatives; he is now suing the company for denying his $16.5 million claim.
A final report from the Minnesota State Fire Marshal lists the fire's cause as undetermined, noting an accidental electrical failure was "not supported by the narrow time" Campbell spent in the building.
