F-15E Strike Eagles, Deployed During Operation Epic Fury, Can Fly 2.5 Times the Speed of Sound. Take a Closer Look.
- Three F-15E Strike Eagles were mistakenly shot down by Kuwait during Operation Epic Fury, and a KC-135 Stratotanker used for in-flight refueling also crashed in Iraq, killing six U.S. service members with no hostile or friendly fire attributed to the crash.
- The F-15E Strike Eagle first flew in 1988 and can reach speeds of 1,875 miles per hour, or 2.5 times the speed of sound, powered by two Pratt & Whitney F100 engines with over 23,000 pounds of thrust each.
- The aircraft features advanced systems such as LANTIRN for all-weather, low-altitude attacks and is armed with an internally mounted 20-millimeter gun, AIM-9 Sidewinder, AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles, and ground attack weapons like JDAM smart bombs.
- The F-15E also has a cockpit design that allows the crew to monitor weapons and flight information without looking away from the windscreen, with a weapon system officer seated behind the pilot to manage armaments.
