What is INS Aridhaman? India set to welcome third nuclear-powered ballistic missile Arihant-class submarine

  • On Friday, India commissioned its third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, INS Aridhaman, into service at a naval base in Kerala, strengthening the naval leg of its nuclear triad.
  • This induction brings India's operational SSBN fleet to three, following INS Arihant's commissioning in 2016 and INS Arighaat's in 2024. These submarines form the bedrock of India's nuclear doctrine of credible minimum deterrence.
  • The 7,000-tonne vessel carries longer-range K-4 SLBMs capable of hitting targets 3,500 km away, alongside a greater number of shorter-range K-15 missiles depending on mission requirements.
  • Follow-On SSBNs, including the larger S5-class, are in development to cover targets across the Asian landmass. The Indian Navy has also revived plans for nuclear-powered attack submarines under Project 77.
  • India joins a select group of nations with nuclear triad capabilities, including the United States, Russia, France, and China. Such assets provide crucial second-strike capability through stealth and survivability.
