Wetherspoons to Open New Pub in Europe 2 and a Half Hours From London

The Castell de Santa Bárbara will operate daily, serving UK and local dishes in nearly 1,000 sq ft, marking Wetherspoon's start of 30 new pubs this year.

  • On Friday, JD Wetherspoon announced it will open its first mainland-Europe pub, the Castell de Santa Barbera, at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport departures at the end of January next year.
  • Sir Tim Martin, founder and chairman, said the launch marks the start of Wetherspoon's expansion overseas, with further openings planned in the current financial year across managed and franchised sites.
  • It will trade seven days a week from 6am to 9pm, offering almost 1,000 square feet of customer space on one level plus an external terrace, with 90 per cent of the menu same as UK and beers like Guinness and Stella Artois.
  • Wetherspoon said it expects the pub to be popular with travellers home from Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandez Airport, which is growing in popularity with UK holidaymakers, after a 3.7% rise in like-for-like sales to November 2.
  • Amid expansion plans, management said it will remain cautious for now, aiming to open pubs overseas in the coming months and years, while mindful of the Chancellor's Budget later this month.
