Westminster Bridge Locked Down After Bomb Squad Called to Suspicious Package
A bomb disposal robot inspected and destroyed a suspicious package near Parliament, which was confirmed as unsent Christmas cards addressed to communities minister Miatta Fahnbulleh.
- On Thursday, bomb disposal squads carried out a controlled explosion on Westminster Bridge after an alarm at around 7.30am, finding the package contained unsent Christmas cards for Labour MP and communities minister Miatta Fahnbulleh.
- Metropolitan Police officers were alerted to the package at about 7.30am, prompting a wide cordon from Jewel Tower to Millbank House and evacuations of College Green and nearby streets.
- Using a remote-controlled robot, specialist officers inspected the package near the Knife Edge sculpture and unloaded the robot on site; witnesses said the area reopened after about 45 minutes.
- Once the threat was neutralised the Met confirmed the incident had been stood down, traffic was reopened, and forensic teams cleared the parliamentary estate after examinations.
- Commuters found key routes into Westminster closed on a busy pre-Christmas workday, as Sky News noted many cards bore `most urgent` labels and army disposal units joined bomb teams.
