Bengal Police Arrest Rejinagar Bypoll Candidate Days After Nandigram Candidate Milan Pradhan’s Arrest

- On Saturday, Berhampore police arrested Saiful Islam, an Independent candidate for the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll, in connection with a five-year-old case involving a clash between two groups during the 2021 state elections.
- Islam is associated with the Aam Janata Unnayan Party , led by Humayun Kabir. Police also arrested AJUP state secretary Ashik Iqbal on Friday in Murshidabad district with illegal arms and fake currency.
- Authorities previously nabbed Congress Nandigram Assembly bypoll candidate Milan Pradhan in a nearly two-decades-old land acquisition case. Both bypolls are slated for October 6 following vacancies created after the 2026 Assembly elections.
- Investigating officers sent a notice to Kabir on Saturday, directing him to appear Monday regarding an alleged conspiracy to foment tension between two communities, a case registered on September 14.
- Police claimed an audio recording released recently indicates a conspiracy to instigate communal tension. The AJUP has fielded Kabir's son, Golam Nabi Azad, for the Rejinagar seat as the party faces legal challenges.
