Deforestation is wreaking havoc on the planet, especially in the Amazon. Such a phenomenon is disrupting local biodiversity, putting certain species at risk. Yet, a study published in the journal Nature brings reassuring news for tropical forests. As part of this, a team of researchers led by environmental scientists Timo Metz studied large plots of forests, mainly located in Ecuador. This scenario could have dramatic consequences not only for South America but for the entire world.
With global warming of 1.5 to 1.9°C, about two thirds of the Amazon rain forest could turn into heavily weakened rainforests or Savannah-like ecosystems if deforestation rises to about 22 to 28 percent of the Amazon region. This is shown by a new study by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), which was published in Nature.
