Wendy's Names Restaurant Industry Veteran Wright as New CEO
Bob Wright returns to lead Wendy’s after five straight quarters of same-store sales declines and plans to close about 300 restaurants.
On Thursday, The Wendy's Company appointed restaurant industry veteran Robert D. "Bob" Wright as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately, replacing interim CEO Kenneth Cook.
Wright replaces Cook, who led the company after former CEO Kirk Tanner departed last year to become chief executive of Hershey, a chocolate manufacturer.
Wendy's has reported five consecutive quarters of same-store sales declines while losing market share to rivals McDonald's and Burger King, prompting plans to close 5% to 6% of U.S. restaurants this year.
Shares have tumbled nearly 35% over the last year amid takeover speculation; billionaire activist investor Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund Management is reportedly exploring funding to take Wendy's private.
Wright, who led a five-year turnaround at Potbelly Corp, aims to elevate operational excellence and strengthen the franchisee financial model, stating "I believe the best days for Wendy's are ahead.
