Weight-Loss Jabs Could Minimise the Symptoms of Asthma
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 24 – An analysis of over 60,000 UK patients found weight-loss jabs improved asthma control in obese individuals despite only modest average weight loss of 0.9kg, researchers said.
- An international study led by Professor David Price at the University of Aberdeen found that GLP1 agonist drugs reduce asthma symptoms in obese patients.
- Researchers reviewed health data from a patient database encompassing over 60,000 individuals, comparing asthma outcomes between those treated with GLP1 agonists and those who were not.
- The study found GLP1s improved asthma symptoms and increased weight loss, working differently on airway inflammation than traditional steroid treatments, which often fail for obese patients.
- Professor Alan Kaplan noted that GLP1 receptor agonists not only aid weight loss but also contribute to better asthma management in individuals with obesity. Dr Erika Kennington described it as a positive development that asthma control improves with weight loss even when achieved through medication.
- Although findings suggest GLP1 agonists could be a potential treatment for steroid-resistant asthma in obesity, more research is needed to confirm broader effectiveness and mechanisms.
