Rainfall Estimates Increased As Powerful Coastal Storm Nears PA: Forecast

Flood watch issued as heavy rain, high tides, and strong winds may cause moderate to major flooding with gusts up to 60 mph, the National Weather Service said.

  • Starting Sunday, Oct. 12, a strong coastal storm will impact Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey through Monday, Oct. 13, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds, the National Weather Service says.
  • The storm's combination of heavy rain, high astronomical tides from the recent supermoon and strong onshore winds is creating a widespread flood threat with storm surge up to 6 feet at the Jersey Shore.
  • Forecasters say 1-3 inches of rain will fall over 36–48 hours, with shore areas likely to receive two to three inches and coastal gusts of 45 to 60 mph while inland gusts reach 30 to 40 mph, peaking Sunday afternoon and evening.
  • Officials urge residents to expect widespread flooding, impassable roads, evacuations, and power outages through Monday as Acting New Jersey Gov. Tahesha Way declared a state of emergency effective 10 p.m. Saturday for all 21 counties.
  • AccuWeather warned residents along coastal New Jersey, Delaware and the Delaware Bay that, 'In a worst-case scenario, the storm could evolve to hurricane strength and turn inland over the mid-Atlantic with a zone where a significant storm surge, high winds and heavy rain occur just to the north of the center,' risking beach erosion and property damage by Tuesday.
