Week-long heat health alert issued for parts of England as temperatures set to soar
ENGLAND, JUL 8 – The UK Health Security Agency warns of rising health risks including increased deaths and strain on care services as temperatures exceed 30°C across six English regions.
- The UK Health Security Agency and Met Office issued a six-day heatwave warning from July 9 to July 15 for London, the Midlands, and the South East due to soaring temperatures.
- This warning follows record-breaking June heat and forecasts that temperatures will reach up to 32°C in parts of England and Wales by Friday and persist through the weekend.
- Motoring experts warn that cars can act like greenhouses, raising internal temperatures by up to 50% within an hour and reducing the effectiveness of heat-sensitive items like hormonal contraceptives and condoms.
- Most hormonal contraceptives require storage between 20-25°C, and heat can weaken or dry out condom latex, increasing breakage risk and lowering contraceptive effectiveness during this heatwave.
- The heatwave may cause increased strain on health services, risk fatalities among vulnerable groups, and prompt advice to keep medications cool and avoid leaving anyone in parked vehicles.
