Weather-related death reported in Greenwood Co.
At least two hypothermia deaths linked to a severe winter storm have occurred amid widespread power outages and over 1,300 warming centers opened statewide, officials said.
- On Monday Greenwood County coroner Sonny Cox said a 96-year-old woman was found unresponsive outside her Swing About home at 12:50 a.m., and the death was ruled accidental hypothermia with dementia noted.
- Meteorological reports show the winter storm moved through Saturday–Sunday, blanketing Kentucky for 36 hours and producing dangerously low temperatures causing hypothermia within 10 to 30 minutes outside.
- The family of Betty Veach, 72, of Williamsburg said she was found near train tracks shortly after being reported missing and allege a head injury, which officials are reviewing.
- With hundreds sheltered, officials are coordinating efforts as power outages fell to 47,123 as of 3 a.m. Monday, and 1,100 transportation trucks plus 358 contractors work restorations.
- Earlier last week officials began preparations and on Friday the governor signed a state of emergency, requested mutual aid from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, and warned power outages will continue with nearly 50% of customers in Allen County and Monroe County still without power.
