'We should not look like kids and clowns': F1 stars criticise Lego car parade
Formula One and Lego will use 22 mini-cars for the Silverstone parade lap after last year’s Miami event saw collisions and bricks scattered.
- Formula One and Lego announced Thursday that 22 drivers will pilot mini-cars built from thousands of bricks during a parade lap at Silverstone before Sunday's British Grand Prix. Emily Prazer, Formula One's chief commercial officer, said the event will "create an incredible spectacle for fans."
- Red Bull driver Max Verstappen criticized the parade plan, arguing it risks making competitors look like "kids and clowns" rather than professional athletes. The Dutchman stated he would prefer the traditional format of waving to fans from a flatbed truck.
- Organizers introduced robust 2.0 Lego cars featuring rental-kart-style bumpers to prevent scattered debris seen during last year's Miami Grand Prix. Each driver now receives an individual vehicle, intended to reduce collisions that occurred when sharing cars in Florida.
- Lewis Hamilton also expressed disapproval regarding the Lego parade lap. Media reports confirm the driver is not a fan of the scheduled Sunday event, though no specific reason was given.
- Contrasting the criticism, reigning champion Lando Norris told the FIA press conference he is "pretty excited" for the parade. Norris noted that doing something different is a "cool thing" for the sport, provided all drivers behave safely.
