Jaishankar Says LAC Stability Key to India-China Normalisation
He said border peace is needed to expand trade and investment, while India still faces a one-sided trade balance and limited market access in China.
- On Tuesday, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar told the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi that peace and tranquillity along the LAC are essential for normalizing India-China relations, warning that border disturbances have consequences.
- Jaishankar recalled that the 2020 Galwan clashes represented a profound departure from the previous 45 years of peace, noting it took four years of negotiations to restore stability following border issues during the Covid lockdown.
- The situation along the LAC has "settled down" to a great extent since 2024, Jaishankar noted to John Micklethwait, with the relationship "commensurately moving towards normalcy" after the military standoff ended.
- Jaishankar highlighted major economic issues, stating the trade balance is "completely tilted" toward China and asserting India is not getting a "level playing field" despite offering one to Chinese businesses.
- India is not insisting that the boundary issue must be solved to conduct business, Jaishankar said, as officials explore "early harvest" possibilities for trade and investment separate from the boundary question.
