Waymo Accelerates Robotaxi Expansion with Launches in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa
Waymo is rolling out access on a limited basis as it expands its self-driving fleet to more than 4,000 vehicles, the company said.
- On Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Alphabet-owned Waymo launched its driverless robotaxi service in Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, bringing its total commercial operations to 14 U.S. cities.
- Waymo's expansion push kicked into gear 18 months ago, cementing its position as U.S. robotaxi market leader. The company now operates more than 4,000 vehicles after launching commercial services in seven new cities since March 2025.
- The Zeekr-built 'Ojai' features 'enhanced sensing cleaning mechanisms' and will be used exclusively in Denver and San Diego. Waymo claims its vehicles are involved in 94% fewer serious-injury crashes than human drivers over the miles driven.
- Colorado Governor Jared Polis said 'Waymo's launch helps us achieve cleaner air sooner,' while Tampa Mayor Jane Castor called the service 'another effective — and exciting — way to get around.' Waymo will invite users on a rolling basis.
- Tens of thousands of people in each market already signed up, and Waymo expects to gradually let users into the system over the coming weeks. The company plans to add highway driving and airport services in the coming months.
