Waymo dominates autonomous vehicle registrations as Tesla trails behind
The new DMV tracker gives the public its first clear count of autonomous vehicles in Texas, with Waymo far ahead of rivals.
- Alphabet-Owned Waymo leads Texas's autonomous vehicle market with 577 registered units, according to a new tracker launched by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, significantly outpacing competitors Avride, Nuro, Tesla, and Zoox.
- A new state law effective May 28 requires companies deploying autonomous vehicles in Texas to self-certify fleets as Level 4 and register with the DMV, providing the first accurate public accounting of industry scale.
- Tesla, which operates in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, has registered 42 autonomous vehicles—less than one-tenth Waymo's fleet size. Records filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show 17 incidents involving Tesla vehicles between July 2025 and April 2026.
- Other companies disclosed smaller fleets: Aurora operates 91 self-driving trucks, Gatik maintains 64, and Volkswagen subsidiary MOIA has 12 autonomous microbuses, though many registered firms are not currently operating commercial services.
- Industry-Wide, the distinction remains significant as Waymo maintains Level 4 status for its robotaxis, whereas Tesla has informed regulators that most of its vehicles feature Level 2 driver assistance systems per Statement 0.
