Freight rates in European inland shipping are rising to record highs due to extremely low water levels. Due to the persistent drought, the water level of the Rhine in Germany threatens to drop to a historic low. ‘Whereas last year they could carry 2,000 to 3,000 tonnes, at the moment that is only 200 to 300 tonnes.’ Currently, four to five vessels are needed to transport the same volume of cargo that is normally handled by a single ship.
The Rhine level continues to fall: only 24 centimetres are expected in Kaub. Ships can charge significantly less, the freight costs increase.
The sinking water level of the Rhine limits inland navigation. Low water could dampen Germany's gross domestic product by 0.1 to 0.2 percent in the third quarter, estimates Stefan Kooths from Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
Heavy conditions on the Rhine: The continuing drought brings many problems. Ship traffic also needs solutions.
