Nigeria: Court Orders Arrest of Former Humanitarian Minister Farouq, Top Official Over Fraud Charges
Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s request after the defendants missed arraignment on a 21-count charge.
- On Thursday, the Federal Capital Territoty High Court in Apo issued bench warrants for the arrest of Sadiya Umar Farouq and Bashir Nura Alkali after both failed to appear for their scheduled arraignment.
- Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie granted the request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission after the defendants repeatedly failed to comply with court summons and bail conditions.
- The EFCC alleged that about $1.3 million and N746 million were misappropriated during their tenure, and that Farouq failed to return her international passport after receiving permission to travel abroad for medical treatment.
- While the third defendant, Sani Nafiu Mohammed, appeared in court, the Prosecution opposed a defense request for a six-week adjournment, insisting on immediate enforcement action.
- The court adjourned the case to May 18, 2026, for arraignment and continuation of trial proceedings against Farouq and Alkali on a 21-count charge involving alleged criminal breach of trust and abuse of office.
