Had a Fake ‘Hi Dad’ Text? You're Not Alone as Scammers Target Dads for Father’s Day
Santander UK said men lost the equivalent of £100,000 a day to scammers in the first half of the year.
On Thursday, Santander issued a warning to parents about 'Hi Dad' impersonation scams ahead of Father's Day on Sunday June 21, after fraudsters stole around £160,000 through these schemes this year.
The scam typically begins with a text message or AI-generated phone call from a fraudster posing as a child, asking victims to save a new number before demanding money for an emergency.
Chris Ainsley, Head of Fraud Risk Management at Santander, urged people to stay alert, saying: "Whether it's an investment opportunity that sounds too good to be true, or a text or phone call out of the blue from your child asking for money, we are urging people to stay alert and stay safe ahead of this Father's Day."
Santander's scamtracker revealed men lost the equivalent of £100,000 daily to various APP scams during the first six months of the year, with investment and purchase fraud among the biggest causes.
Hannah Bingle, Financial Crime Awareness Specialist at Yorkshire Building Society, recommended calling loved ones on existing numbers to verify messages, noting: "If you're still not sure, you can ask something the genuine person would know but a scammer couldn't guess.
