Walmart recalls potentially radioactive shrimp from stores
The FDA advised consumers to discard frozen shrimp products possibly contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope linked to increased cancer risk from prolonged exposure.
- On Aug. 19, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an urgent alert and asked Walmart to pull Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp lots 8005540-1, 8005538-1 and 8005539-1 with Best by 3/15/2027.
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection detected Cs-137 in containers at the ports of Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah and Miami, prompting import restrictions on PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia.
- The recalled products are two-pound Great Value brand Frozen Raw Ez Peel Tail-On Farm-Raised White Vannamei Shrimp bags sold in Walmart stores across 13 states including Alabama, Florida, and Texas.
- The FDA advised consumers who purchased affected shrimp to discard or return them for a refund, warning long-term low-dose Cs-137 exposure may increase cancer risk.
- Looking beyond the recall, agencies have issued import alerts and are investigating, with the FDA coordinating with Indonesian seafood regulators and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to enhance the U.S. food import system's oversight.
