How the Other Half Lives: VW Shows Off Electric Polo GTI for Europe
The 222-horsepower Polo GTI keeps Volkswagen’s GTI driving character and will start pre-sales under €39,000 in Germany this fall.
On Friday, Volkswagen introduced the Polo GTI, declaring the new EV hot hatch "100% electric and 100% GTI." This marks a new era 50 years after the original Golf GTI launch.
The Polo GTI delivers 222 hp and 290 Nm of torque, enabling it to sprint from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Volkswagen claims it "feels like a quintessential GTI."
Inside, the cabin features a 10.25 digital cockpit and 12.93 central infotainment screen with a new Retro Mode. Compact drive modules provide 19 mm more interior space than the Gas Polo.
Powered by a 52 kWh NMC battery, the vehicle reaches 80% charge in around 24 minutes with DC charging speeds up to 105 kW. Pre-sales begin this Fall in Germany, starting at around $45,000.
Volkswagen is planning a more powerful Polo GTI Clubsport model, Florian Umbach told Autocar. The future version is expected to deliver around 282 hp, up from 223 hp in the standard version.
For almost 50 years, GTI has been synonymous with petrol, gear changes and small cars with big temperament. Now Volkswagen is putting power to the name. The price suggests it could attract more buyers than the most die-hard enthusiasts.
