What Is Norovirus? Highly Contagious 'Vomiting Bug' Spreading Across US Regions Amid Rising Wastewater Levels
Wastewater surveillance shows high concentrations, and the CDC recorded 1,194 outbreaks from Aug. 1 to May 7, down from 2,534 a year earlier.
- Recent wastewater surveillance reveals an upward trend to "high" levels of norovirus across much of the country, with rates currently rising in the Northeast, Amanda Bidwell, scientific program manager at WastewaterSCAN, said.
- During the 2024-25 season, the GII strain caused about 75% of outbreaks, and norovirus is highly contagious, with infected patients spreading the virus to up to seven other people on average, Linda Yancey, infectious disease specialist at Memorial Hermann, said.
- Vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps usually start 12 to 48 hours after exposure, as the virus spreads through contaminated food, surfaces, or direct contact in crowded settings like cruise ships.
- Vulnerable populations should monitor for warning signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth. Experts recommend oral rehydration fluids rather than sports drinks like Gatorade, and emphasize hand washing over sanitizers.
- National levels are not "unusually high" compared with prior seasons, according to the CDC, though seasonal travel and extreme heat may contribute to outbreaks, Aaron Glatt, chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau, said.
