Report: Volvo's New Entry-Level EV Will Be Longer, Taller, and Less Pricey Than the EX40
The model will ride on Volvo’s SPA3 architecture and start in the high $40,000s, as the EX30 is phased out after 2026.
On Monday, Automotive News reported that Volvo plans to launch the EX50 electric crossover in the United States by late 2027 with a starting price in the high $40,000 range.
This new model will replace the EX40 and EX30 as Volvo's entry-level electric offering, competing in the compact SUV segment against the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Manufacturing will occur at Volvo's new $1.3 billion facility in Slovakia with an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles, utilizing the SPA3 platform shared with the EX60.
Positioned roughly $10,000 cheaper than the EX60, Volvo expects to sell up to 10,000 units in the United States during the vehicle's first year on the market.
While a Volvo spokesperson declined to confirm future products, they stated that electric vehicles are "where we see the market growing," even as the company adjusts its all-EV brand goals.
