Trump is hitting back with heavy tariffs – and now there is growing concern in Gothenburg that Volvo's plan to move more manufacturing to the US will affect Gothenburg residents who work in the automotive industry.

Sweden's Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely, will increase its production of vehicles in the United States and probably produce an additional model there, following US President Donald's Trump's introduction of tariffs, its CEO told media on Thursday.

Blue skies over Gothenburg, but the spirit that hovered over Volvo Cars' AGM was Donald Trump's. “We now have to build our cars where we sell them,” said new CEO Håkan Samuelsson, explaining that a new car model needs to be assembled at the US plant in Charleston.

The Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars, owned by the Chinese group Geely, will have to increase its vehicle production in the United States and probably produce one more model in order to cope with the increase in customs duties decided by Donald Trump, said its managing director on Thursday in Bloomberg.

It is not yet clear how the decision will affect Swedish jobs.
