Volcano Watch: Taking Kilauea’s temperature

USGS scientists report Kilauea’s summit magma temperatures increased by up to 70°F over a decade, with recent eruptions hotter than those from 2018 to 2023.

Geochemical analysis of erupted tephra samples over the past decade help scientists understand the temperature of Kilauea’s shallow magma system under the summit — and things have been “heating up!”
