Vodafone reveals cause of massive internet blackout amid calls for compensation

Vodafone attributed the outage to a software issue, affecting over 130,000 users at peak and disrupting internet, app, and customer services before full recovery.

  • On Monday afternoon Vodafone blamed a non-malicious software issue at a vendor partner, saying the blackout was not a cyber attack and service has fully recovered.
  • Hundreds of customers reported wifi, 4G and 5G connections dropping out, while Vodafone's app, website and customer services were also down during the outage.
  • Ofcom advises that compensation depends on circumstances, and Melanie Pizzey warned Vodafone could face `a wave of compensation claims` if losses are linked to the outage.
  • Public reaction included one X user warning scammers pretended to be from Vodafone to get compensation, while customers demanded payouts and threatened to cancel contracts.
  • Vodafone apologised for any inconvenience caused to customers, acknowledging this outage must have had major effects on ordinary people/business.
