Vodafone, BT, and Virgin Media internet goes down, compensation rights explained
Thousands of UK broadband customers affected by outages from multiple providers may receive automatic compensation if service is not restored within two days, Ofcom says.
- On Wednesday, customers across the UK reported a broadband outage affecting Vodafone, BT and Virgin Media between 1pm and 3pm, with Vodafone's network appearing completely down nationwide.
- Vodafone and Virgin acknowledged network and connection issues while the cause remains unclear, and the network status checker is currently unavailable.
- Ofcom's automatic compensation scheme covers most major providers including Vodafone and BT; Vodafone's terms state customers receive £9.98 after two working days, then £9.98 daily up to 60 days.
- Home workers should check their contract or their employer's work‑from‑home policy because making up hours is at employer discretion, and some used mobile hotspots or public Wi‑Fi to continue working.
- Report the fault to your provider to activate automatic compensation and contact Ofcom if unpaid; Downdetector recorded more than 1,000 Virgin Media reports, and compensation must be paid within 30 calendar days.
