Visitor Dies After Fall on Angels Landing Trail in Zion National Park
The National Park Service said 13 hikers have died from falls on Angels Landing since 2000.
- On Friday, a visitor died after falling from the Angels Landing Trail at Zion National Park in southern Utah. The National Park Service confirmed they received reports of the fall at 2 p.m.
- Angels Landing is a thin, precarious trail where climbers navigate with only a chain for support. The route features dangerous drops of 500 to 1,000 feet down the side of the trail.
- Due to recovery attempts, rangers closed the West Rim Trail and Angels Landing immediately on Friday. Officials reopened both trails on Saturday morning after clearing the area and recovering the body.
- The Angels Landing Trail is consistently ranked among the most dangerous in the national park system. Records show well over a dozen people have fallen from the trail since 2000, with 13 deaths from injuries.
- U.S. Sen. John Curtis, who spoke at the 100th anniversary of the Zion National Park Lodge earlier that day, expressed concern about the permit requirement. "I feel so bad that it takes a permit," Curtis said.
