At the heart of the Virgin's cluster, the middle spiral galaxy NGC 4654 fights against titaniumic forces that distort its structure, while stimulating the birth of new stars.
The Hubble space telescope has photographed a spiral galaxy that looks split in half. Not by an explosion, but by a long history of cosmic tears. It is called NGC 4654, it lives in the Virgo cluster at 72 million light years away and its most disturbing feature is an asymmetry difficult to explain: one of its arms is brimming with young stars and bright gas; the other is almost depopulated, as if the galaxy had forgotten to build that side.
