Paralyzed Virginia Graduate Walks Across Stage with Help From Robotic Suit
The exoskeleton helped Jaiden Picot receive his Executive MBA after a 2024 spinal cord injury, and he is raising money for an accessible van.
On Saturday, Jaiden Picot walked across the Virginia Union University graduation stage to receive his Executive MBA using a robotic exoskeleton suit, marking his second diploma since sustaining a spinal cord injury in 2024.
Paralyzed two years ago after a truck struck his electric scooter, Picot refused to let the life-altering injury derail his educational dreams; he earned his bachelor's degree from VUU last year before returning to complete his MBA.
To assist in walking, Picot used a robotic exoskeleton from EksoBionics and the Sheltering Arms Institute, describing the technology as a 'Transformer suit' that allowed him to walk each step.
Advocating for accessible housing, he plans to pursue a career in real estate and help others find comfortable homes, a goal he shared with WRIC after the ceremony.
A GoFundMe campaign is currently raising funds for an accessible van for Picot, who hopes his story inspires others to maintain hope during challenging times.
