Cassese Elevated to UVA Men’s Lax Coach

UVA filled the opening with Kevin Cassese, a former assistant under Lars Tiffany, as the program seeks continuity after Tiffany’s departure.

  • On Tuesday, Virginia announced Kevin Cassese as head coach of its men's lacrosse program, replacing two-time national championship coach Lars Tiffany. Cassese, who served as assistant coach and offensive coordinator, was promoted from within.
  • While Tiffany won national titles in 2019 and 2021 with a 17-3 record in his first championship year, Virginia's program slipped recently with no NCAA tournament appearance in 2025 and a first-round exit this season after back-to-back Final Four appearances in 2023 and 2024.
  • Cassese brings head coaching experience from Lehigh, where he compiled a 136-104 record from 2008-2023 and won three Patriot League titles in 2012, 2013, and 2021. He previously served as an assistant at Duke during its 2007 national championship run.
  • UVA Director of Athletics Carla Williams said Cassese "embodies the integrity and competitive excellence that have defined this championship program." Cassese, his wife Katie, and their children Drew, Anna, and Claire will continue living in Charlottesville.
  • Cassese emerged as the logical internal candidate from the start, signaling Virginia's confidence in rebuilding on established foundations. Though the program has not won a national championship since 2021, it remains competitive rather than forgotten in elite lacrosse circles.
