The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) called on the government of Daniel Noboa “the complete cessation of repression” and the withdrawal of the security forces from Otavalo (Imbabura), where there are clashes in the context of protests against the elimination of diesel subsidies.

With a total of 7,000 military and police officers, the authorities seek to regain control of the province and ensure security after more than three weeks of protests.

Without commercial or tourist activity and almost without provisions, with groups of demonstrators in an aggressive attitude forcing the closure of businesses and with the public forces trying to impose order, the city of Otavalo, in the north of Ecuador, has become the symbol of the virtual state of siege following an indigenous strike that has been in the South American country for almost a month.
