Violence escalates in South Sudan as a government commissioner is killed
Officials said renewed fighting in Jonglei State killed the county commissioner and left casualty figures unclear as both sides blamed each other.
A government-appointed county commissioner, James Kueth Makuach, was assassinated by opposition forces in Jonglei State, South Sudan, during renewed violence on Sunday.
Makuach was killed when opposition fighters attacked Walgak, a remote area in Akobo West, as confirmed by officials from both sides.
Makuach defected to President Salva Kiir's ruling party in April after his removal by the opposition earlier this year.
The renewed violence undermines the 2018 peace deal and threatens civilian safety, according to the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission.
