Vinted side hustle earned mum £2,000 after Maternity Pay slashed her income
Stacey Hillier says the resale app has become a backup fund as maternity pay drops to about £700 a month.
Warwickshire mum Stacey Hillier has earned more than £2,000 selling children's clothes on Vinted after her monthly income plunged from around £3,000 to roughly £700 following maternity leave in January.
Knowing her income would fall sharply, Stacey began saving money as soon as she discovered she was pregnant, yet the dramatic drop still forced her to seek additional revenue streams.
At £187 weekly statutory maternity pay—roughly £700 monthly—Stacey faces mounting expenses including baby formula costing around £11 a tub. She noted that "people think maternity leave is time off, but it's actually one of the most expensive periods of your life."
Vinted, originally downloaded to declutter her home, has become Stacey's financial safety net for family outings and everyday costs. She explained that "having my Vinted balance there as a backup gives me peace of mind."
The side hustle transformed Stacey's shopping habits entirely; she now checks Vinted before buying expensive items, saving £14 on a £22 set of rompers. Children's clothes remain her best sellers at £1 to £3 each, making her prefer Vinted over Facebook groups where strangers once visited her door.
