Villa sign Germany midfielder Goretzka on free transfer
On Thursday, August 27, 2026, Aston Villa announced the signing of Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka on a free transfer following his departure from Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery secured Goretzka to strengthen the midfield after Youri Tielemans moved to Manchester United and Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, while Amadou Onana remains sidelined with an ACL injury.
Goretzka brings substantial experience, having made 312 appearances for Bayern Munich with 51 goals and earned 73 caps for the German national team, including three FIFA World Cups and the 2021 European Championships.
Villa faces immediate pressure after suffering a 1-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup and a 0-4 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion, with Arsenal arriving on Monday.
Goretzka represents the seventh summer signing for Villa as the club pursues further reinforcements before the transfer window closes on September 1, still seeking a centre-back and winger.
In Bavaria, national player Leon Goretzka did not get a new contract. Aston Villa brings him to Birmingham – and celebrates the contract with an idiosyncratic comparison.
Off to the island: DFB pro Leon Goretzka moves to the English Premier League to European League winner Aston Villa. Renowned clubs like FC Barcelona never showed any concrete interest, but the Champions League beckons anyway.
