Video. Rome’s Colosseum Glows Pink for Breast Cancer Prevention Campaign
The reopening follows a fatal fall that prompted prosecutors to examine workplace safety and the companies involved in the lighting project.
- On Tuesday, the Colosseum in Rome was illuminated in pink to launch the seventh edition of the 'La prevenzione è il nostro capolavoro' campaign, organized by Komen Italia with the Culture Ministry and Health Ministry.
- Shortly before midnight that Tuesday, 22-year-old worker Andrea Moretti died after falling around 10 metres between the second and third levels of the Colosseum while installing a new lighting system.
- Investigators examining Moretti's death found his safety rope was not attached, prompting prosecutors to place seven people under investigation for alleged culpable homicide and potential workplace safety regulation breaches.
- As a mark of respect for Moretti and his family, the Colosseum remained closed until Saturday, September 26, with Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli scheduled to meet workers at the Archaeological Park before reopening.
- An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, September 28, at the University of Rome La Sapienza, as prosecutors review the project's organization and why the work was performed at night.
