Langley Gets Canada’s First FIFA Mini-Arena
The smaller-than-regulation field is part of FIFA’s pledge to build more than 1,000 mini-pitches worldwide by 2030.
- On Wednesday, Langley Township became Canada's first city to open a FIFA mini-pitch at the Langley Events Centre, inaugurated by Langley Township Mayor Eric Woodward for young players.
- FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov timed the launch to coincide with the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, supporting FIFA President Gianni Infantino's pledge to build more than 1,000 mini-pitches globally by 2030.
- Combined costs for the 20 planned pitches total $13 million, with funding including about $4.5 million from the province and $3 million in in-kind contributions from the Vancouver Whitecaps.
- Canada Soccer President Peter Augruso noted the project took roughly two months to complete, while Councillor Margaret Kunst called the facility an "awesome" addition for local kids.
- Woodward called the facility's arrival a "fabulous coincidence" as Canada co-hosts the FIFA World Cup and the Langley United Soccer Association celebrates 100 years; he has requested a second arena for Aldergrove Athletic Park.
