Vancouver Island Preschoolers Urge Drivers to Slow Down to Save Baby Deer
Students made signs after seeing deer struggle to cross the road, and the preschool said the children wanted drivers to protect wildlife and slow down.
Moss Rock Preschool students recently carried placards on Fairfield Street, asking drivers to slow down to protect baby deer. The children sought to make a tangible community impact.
After observing deer struggling to cross roads due to speeding vehicles, the preschool invited children to create signs. The students acted because they were worried for the safety of the deer and themselves.
The Fairfield Gonzales Community Association praised the students on Facebook, noting that children are true advocates for their beliefs. The group explained that protest serves as a way to communicate what they care about.
Drivers involved in wildlife collisions can report vehicle damage through ICBC, while deceased animals on municipal roads can be reported to the City of Victoria. The BC Conservation Officer Service also accepts wildlife reports.
Deer remain a common sight in the Fairfield neighbourhood throughout the spring and summer months. This ongoing presence underscores the importance of the safety measures advocated by the local preschool students.
