Canadian Tennis Star Mboko to Miss Wimbledon with Injured MCL in Left Knee
The WTA No. 9 said she is focused on returning as soon as possible after the knee injury.
On Friday, 19-year-old Canadian tennis player Victoria Mboko announced she will miss Wimbledon following an MCL injury to her left knee sustained during a match at the HSBC Championships on Wednesday.
Mboko retired from her Round of 16 match against Karolina Pliskova at the Queen's Club on Wednesday after slipping behind the baseline while attempting to return a serve.
The injury ends her doubles partnership with 44-year-old Serena Williams, whom Mboko thanked on Friday for the "incredible opportunity" after the pair won their opening match on Tuesday.
Wimbledon officials confirmed on Friday that Darja Vidmanova will replace Mboko in the main draw as the No 9 seed deals with an "ongoing left knee injury."
The Burlington, Ont., native is focused on a return to action "as soon as possible," while the All England Lawn Tennis Club wildcard committee prepares to finalize championship decisions next week.
Victoria Mboko has withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a knee injury. The 19-year-old Canadian announced that she will miss the rest of the grass season, but hopes to resume her doubles partnership with Serena Williams at the US Open.
