From goats to porcupines, these animal evacuees escaped B.C. wildfire
The society said volunteers and foster families helped move the animals to safety as wildfires put thousands of B.C. homes at risk.
On Aug. 5, the Victoria Humane Society took in 34 animals evacuated from the Central Cariboo area near Williams Lake, including 13 puppies, one adult dog, and 20 kittens rescued from wildfire-threatened regions.
Rescue partners and volunteers facilitated the emergency transport, with Jim Sullivan completing the overnight drive through what the society described as "horrific conditions" to ensure the animals reached safety.
Separately, local resident Nowlin Kazimir rescued 32 horses, 17 goats, and other animals from Westside Road, while caring for a burned pig named Jelly Bean, saying "We just got slammed."
The rescued animals are currently undergoing medical evaluations in Greater Victoria, and the Victoria Humane Society has asked the public to wait on adoption inquiries while seeking foster homes with fenced yards.
Wildfires continue to threaten communities and livestock across the region, and the Victoria Humane Society expects more emergency transports throughout the summer as the crisis unfolds.
