Vianode Breaks Ground on $3.2 Billion Plant in St. Thomas, Ont.

The plant will start at 35,000 tonnes per year and scale to 150,000 tonnes, creating up to 1,000 jobs and lowering carbon emissions by 90%, Vianode said.

  • On Nov. 20, 2025, Vianode AS said it will invest $3.2 billion to build a synthetic graphite plant in St. Thomas, Ontario, initially creating 300 jobs and ramping to 1,000 at full capacity.
  • After a years-long due diligence process, Vianode AS chose St. Thomas, Ontario in Automotive Alley for its location and said the decision predated the United States-Canada trade war.
  • The company plans to begin at 35,000 tonnes per year and ramp to 150,000 tonnes per year, with front-end engineering completed in October and production targeted for 2028.
  • With federal letters of interest in place, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the province will provide a $670-million loan, while the German government may contribute up to $300 million, and Vianode has an offtake with General Motors Co.
  • North American supply chains remain heavily reliant on graphite sourced from China, while Tim Hodgson, Ontario minister of energy and natural resources, said Vianode's low‑carbon synthetic graphite cuts emissions about 90 per cent, aligning with federal critical-minerals plans.
