Veteran California US House member Mike Thompson will face Democratic challenger in November
Jones, 35, finished second in California’s top-two primary and sets up a generational matchup against longtime Rep. Mike Thompson.
On Friday, Democrat Eric Jones advanced to the November ballot in California's 4th Congressional District, where he will face Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson in a significant generational contest.
Jones, a 35-year-old former venture capitalist, secured the second slot during California's June 2 nonpartisan primary, finalizing his path to the general election.
This race marks the second generational challenge against a California House Democrat; Thompson was first elected in 1998, while Rep. Doris Matsui, 81, also represents veteran House leadership.
Democrats redrew the California House map to counter Republican redistricting gains in Texas, with primaries focused on whether the party could pick up five additional seats.
In Los Angeles, 15-term Rep. Brad Sherman successfully fended off a younger challenger, while 41-year-old Sacramento City Councilwoman Mai Vang challenges an incumbent and Democrats avoided seat lockouts.
