China Opens Major Canal Linking Landlocked Regions to Sea
The 134.2-kilometer waterway is expected to cut logistics costs by 18% to 30% and save more than 5 billion yuan a year, state media said.
- On Wednesday, China opened the Pinglu Canal, a 134.2km waterway connecting landlocked Guangxi to the Gulf of Tonkin and providing a shortcut to Association of Southeast Asian Nations markets.
- Previously, goods from inland regions required a 560km detour via Guangzhou. State news agency Xinhua reported the project cost 72.7 billion yuan to increase maritime trade connectivity.
- Designed to handle vessels weighing up to 5,000 tonnes, the canal reduces transport costs by 18 per cent to 30 per cent, with annual savings projected at more than 5 billion yuan.
- State broadcaster CCTV described the waterway as 'the project of our century.' Two trade routes have launched, including a connection between Nanning and Vietnam's Can Tho.
- Infrastructure development continues with new berths at Nanning's Liujing Operations Area handling 5,000-tonne vessels. The project aims to connect inland waterways to provinces including Henan, Jiangxi, Hunan, and Hubei.
