Vernon and Coldstream Fire Departments Will Better Support Each Other with New Program
The agreement will send engines and crews sooner for qualifying fires and includes public reviews of each activation over two years.
- On Thursday, Aug. 13, Vernon and Coldstream launched The Automatic Aid Pilot Project, a two-year commitment to streamline firefighting resource sharing and enhance emergency response capabilities between the neighbouring municipalities.
- Unlike traditional mutual aid agreements which require requests after firefighters arrive on scene, automatic aid ensures neighbouring resources are dispatched immediately when qualifying incidents are reported, allowing personnel to respond sooner during critical early stages.
- Under the agreement, Coldstream Fire Department will automatically dispatch a fire engine and crew to general alarm fires in Vernon, while Vernon Fire Rescue Services will dispatch crews to structure fires or working fires within a designated response area in Coldstream.
- Residents will continue to receive fire protection from their local fire department without changes to 911 dispatch or station locations, Coldstream Mayor Ruth Hoyte and Vernon Mayor Victor Cumming said, noting the project demonstrates municipal cooperation.
- Throughout the two-year period, each activation will be reviewed to evaluate response effectiveness, operational coordination, resource availability, response times, and costs, with Findings reported publicly to both councils to assess overall impact.
