Democrats are trying to nominate a challenger after five failed attempts, while 17,000 ballots had already been cast by Friday, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Vermont Democrats will attempt to nominate a gubernatorial candidate to challenge Republican Gov. Phil Scott. Voters will also decide contested primaries for lieutenant governor, state auditor, and the U.S. House seat held by Rep. Becca Balint.
- Gov. Scott, a rare Republican critic of President Donald Trump, received 73% of the vote in his 2024 reelection bid. If reelected, he would surpass Howard Dean as the state's longest-serving governor.
- Economist Amanda Janoo and CEO Aly Richards are competing for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Richards has raised about $453,000, compared to about $308,000 for Janoo, while securing endorsements from former Democratic Govs. Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin.
- Vermont's open primary allows any registered voter to participate in any party's primary regardless of party registration. As of Friday, about 17,000 ballots had already been cast in a state with about 501,000 registered voters.
- All 30 state Senate seats and 150 state House seats are up for election in 2026. Democratic incumbents in five state Senate and 11 state House districts face primary challengers, intensifying competition this year.
