In Vermont, Pay Phones Return Free of Charge in Cellular Dead Zone
ORANGE COUNTY, VERMONT, JUL 22 – Engineer Schlott installs refurbished pay phones to provide free calls in areas lacking cell coverage, with 370 calls made in five months, aiding students and emergency needs.
- About five months ago, Schlott installed his first free phone outside North Tunbridge General Store, offering no-cost calls as a full-time engineer at BETA Technologies.
- He realized there was no cell service for 10 miles in either direction, and Schlott sources and refurbishes pay phones in his basement workshop.
- According to Schlott, 370 calls have been made since the phone was installed five months ago, with the Latham Library location seeing the most usage.
- Store owner Mike Gross said 'Yeah, but it doesn’t cost any money now,' while Hannah McClain said 'It does make me feel safer if the kids are out and about, that they could stop and use this.'
- Looking ahead, installations will extend to Brownell Library in Essex, and Schlott currently covers all costs but said that may change as the project scales.
