Venice Film Festival ends with Golden Lion at stake after ‘NAZA’ draws record ovation
The late-added documentary features testimony from Israeli military insiders and became the festival’s leading awards contender after a record audience reaction.
- On Saturday, the late festival addition NAZA received a 25-minute standing ovation, the longest on record at the 83rd Venice Film Festival. Directed by Rachel Szor and Yuval Abraham, the documentary is the only film in competition.
- Other films received enthusiastic ovations stretching into the mid-teens, including Wild Horse Nine and Bunker, where audiences clapped for over 14 minutes. This surpassed the 24-minute record set last year by The Voice of Hind Rajab.
- South Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love became an immediate critical favorite, marking his first film in eight years following acclaimed Burning. The international slate also featured May El Toukhy's Woman Unknown and Hirokazu Koreeda's Look Back.
- The 83rd Venice Film Festival concludes Saturday with the Golden Lion presentation, decided by a jury led by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The panel includes English composer Daniel Blumberg, French filmmaker Xavier Giannoli, Afghan filmmaker Shahrbanoo Sadat, and Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To.
- Martin McDonagh's previous Venice premieres, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Banshees of Inisherin, earned screenplay prizes and acting wins for Colin Farrell, Frances McDormand, and Sam Rockwell. Those films went on to receive multiple Oscar nominations.
