Venezuela’s opposition candidate Edmundo González calls for presidential elections
González said elections need independent referees, observers and the release of political prisoners as Venezuela nears five months under interim rule.
- On Saturday, 76-year-old former diplomat Edmundo González called for new presidential elections in Venezuela from his exile in Spain, citing the need for citizen-led change as the five-month mark of interim President Delcy Rodríguez's administration nears.
- Interim President Delcy Rodríguez assumed power on Jan. 5 following the U.S. military intervention that ousted Nicolás Maduro, who now faces prosecution in the United States alongside his wife.
- Demanding "independent referees," political pluralism, and "an end to the persecution," González declared himself the "guardian" of his constituents' mandate for "freedom" in the 2024 election.
- Neither Caracas nor Washington has indicated that elections are imminent, even as González seeks to "build the conditions for holding presidential elections that serve as citizen instruments for change."
- Opposition leader Corina Machado recently met with leaders in Panama to advocate for a democratic transition, insisting she will return to Venezuela before the end of the year to run for president.
