Venezuelan Woman Released From ICE Detention Facility in Pompano Beach Following Family Protests

Relatives and local politicians pressed for her release as ICE reported 5,605 undocumented immigrants detained in the Miami area in July.

  • Venezuelan Claudia Rodriguez was released from an ICE detention center in Pompano Beach on Monday after being held for nearly three weeks. She had been detained while attempting to travel to North Carolina.
  • Rodriguez, who arrived in the United States in 2017 on a tourist visa, was detained early last month at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. She held Temporary Protected Status until last year and currently has a pending asylum case.
  • Family members and South Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman campaigned for her release last week. Wasserman Schultz highlighted facility conditions where Rodriguez lost 15 pounds in a cell with 75 people during her eight days there.
  • Following her Monday release, Rodriguez is wearing an ankle monitor and shared her experience at a news conference in the office of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Her legal status with ICE remains unclear as of Tuesday.
  • Rodriguez expressed persistent fear of re-detention, stating, "I do not feel safe." Meanwhile, ICE reported detaining 5,605 people in the Miami area between July 1 and July 26, underscoring broader enforcement activity.
