1 Killed After Car Plunges 500 Feet Off Highway 1 in Big Sur
Search and rescue crews recovered one deceased occupant after a vehicle fell over 500 feet at Hurricane Point, with operations hampered by strong winds, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, a vehicle went off Highway 1 at Hurricane Point in Big Sur and plunged more than 500 feet to the rocks below, where rescue crews found one occupant who was pronounced deceased.
- Around 4:22 p.m., Monterey County Sheriff's Office dispatchers received several 911 calls reporting a vehicle had gone off the roadway, and callers said they believed it had entered the water; Big Sur Fire and the sheriff's office established a unified command to coordinate search-and-rescue.
- Sheriff Tina Nieto said `Weather conditions made recovery efforts extremely challenging. Strong winds required our Search and Rescue personnel to take additional safety precautions throughout the operation` as recovery continued through about 8:45 p.m.
- Following recovery, the coroner's office received the victim while CHP opened an investigation into the crash.
- The location at Hurricane Point drew a multi-agency response and news coverage, with local media including KPIX documenting the recovery about a mile south of the Bixby Creek Bridge.
